Entry Conditions
Participation is open to artists who use the textile medium for their artistic expression and research.
The proposed works, produced not before 2000, must be created using materials suitable for either traditional or experimental weaving, or for other/mixed textile techniques.
In keeping with the spirit of Fiber Art, in which the artist is both inventor and maker of his/her own work, each submitted piece will have to be unique (non-serial) and personally created either on or off loom (in the case of tapestries not produced by a tapestry factory). Group works are also accepted. In such cases a separate application form will have to be filled in by each one of the artists who contributed to the creation of the work.
Pieces must not exceed 2 metres in width. Textile sculptures and installations will also be accepted, according to the available exhibition room.
Works framed in a traditional way will not be accepted.
Each artist may submit two works by sending the following documentation to: Biblioteca Civica “Nicolò Francone”, Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 1 - 10023 Chieri (TO-ITALY), by September 15, 2003:
1 The enclosed application form, duly filled by completing each one of its parts (Please indicate any specific environment and preservation requirements for your works; it is also important for you to specify whether your place and date of birth may be included in the catalogue: in case you do not answer this question, data will be published. )
2 A Curriculum Vitae including:
§ Educational/academic qualifications, masters, specializations, indicating the city where you qualified.
§ Solo Exhibitions, always including in the following order: year, title of the exhibition, site, city, country.
§ Group Exhibitions and Public Awards, always indicating in the following order: year, title of the exhibition/prize, site, city, country.
§ Works included in public collections, stating name of the Institution or Museum, place and country.
§ Brief notes on the kind of research carried out, specifying the use of special techniques, if any (textile, dyeing, manipulation,...). In the case of specific techniques (e.g. shibori dyeing), please include some technical details.
§ Some very brief critique notes/ excerpts, if you wish to.
The CV will have to be concise (it should not exceed 5-10 typed lines) and written in either Italian, or English. Please include only the most relevant exhibitions, concentrating on the most recent ones (maximum 10 items). The organizers will reserve themselves the right to use and select images, curriculum data and other annotations from the artists’ application forms, according to the graphical needs and content requirements of the catalogue, the brochures and all advertising materials.
3 For each work: a colour slide (24-x 36-mm) of the whole piece plus a slide of the same size showing a detail of that work. Slides must be professionally done, mounted in a plastic frame without glass. Please indicate your name and surname on each slide, and mark with a red dot, or with the word ‘top’, the top right-hand corner of each slide. Since the jury will base their selection on the projection of the slides, it is the artist’s interest that they be of high quality, providing a clear and detailed view of each work.
4 For each work: 2 (identical) prints of a colour photograph (13 x 18 cm). Name of the author, title, year, technique and base and height sizes (clearly indicated) must me written in block characters on the back of each photograph. No photocopies accepted.
5 For each work: a sample of the material and/or threads used.
6 A picture of the artist to be published in the catalogue, if you wish to (professional or high quality recommended).
7 A self-addressed envelope that will be used to communicate the results of the selection.
Applications including incomplete documentation or inappropriate photographic material, as well as applications sent after the deadline (September 15, 2003) will not be taken into consideration.
The documentation and photographic material will not be returned to the artists – not even in the case of exclusion from the selection - but will be stored in the archives of Chieri’s Textile Museum.
By signing the application form, artists authorise the organizers of the exhibition to use their personal data and photographic material for the catalogue and the press. Artists also undertake to make the proposed works available for the entire duration of the exhibition.
The jury
A qualified jury designated by the Town Council will select the works. The jury’s decisions are final. The names of the appointed jury members will be officialized at the opening of the Biennial.
Artists will be informed of the selection outcomes by October 31, 2003.
Preparation of the Exhibition
The organisers of the Biennial will take all decisions regarding the setting-up of the two exhibition sites, as well as the space and collocation to be given to each work. Artworks must be supplied with suitable hanging devices and with indications for their correct display, if any.
Transportation of works
Return transportation expenses and insurance of the works during transportation will be paid by the artists. The works must be shipped in sturdy re-usable packaging in order to guarantee the safety of each piece.
Selected artists will receive detailed instructions about shipment times and conditions.
The organisers will not accept any responsibility for the storage of the works, nor for any extension of the insurance cover. Therefore, the works which are not personally withdrawn at the end of the exhibition will be returned by a courier timely appointed by the consignee. Please note that, since an international shipping service at the consignee’s expense is not available return of the works by mail will not be possible.
Insurance
The organisers of the Biennial will be responsible for insuring the works from the time of their arrival until the end of the exhibition. When indicating the work’s value in the application form, please note that clearly exaggerated amounts may lead to the exclusion of the work itself.
